    John Meredith (–) was born in Holbrook, New South Wales. He left school at the age of 14, did odd jobs and eventually found work with the local chemist. In he rode his bicycle to Melbourne, where he lived for two years. He joined the Russian–Australian Friendship Society and became an ardent socialist, later joining the Communist Party of Australia. Writing or co-authoring many books on Australian tradition and history including the classic Folk Songs of Australia and the Men and Women Who Sang Them, still easily the most important single volume in the field, he achieved official recognition late in life, his original field recordings becoming an acknowledged national treasure.

    Strings Around the World, is designed for the student string orchestra, string quartet, or violin group. The arrangements often take the tunes a step further than their original musical intention but they are not technically difficult.
